2010 has been a very successful year for Vietnamese hotgirl Elly Tran Ha (Elly Kim Hong). Modeling or child abuse?
Sexy photographs of teenaged models in scanty clothes and sexy lingerie are being widely circulated on the net, arousing prurient interest and raising moral questions.
There is a photo of Hoang Thi Bao Tran, just 12, showing her underpants at a fashion show titled “Fashion and Passion” last month.
The event was later shown on TV with the portion deleted. But the photo was splashed on the net with titles like “Teenage model reveals underwear” and “Naked photos of model Bao Tran.”
However, many realize it was a wardrobe malfunction that was not premeditated.
Her father called it “accidental.”

“She tried to hold down her dress from the strong wind. At first, she was worried her classmates will gossip about it. But finally she stopped thinking about it,” he said.
But clearly he is not amused by her shenanigans. “She is naïve and childish. She does not even know what a celebrity is. Her duty is to focus on studies. We hope that she will graduate from university and get a good job in future.”
The 1.72m starlet won a “Teen Model” contest in 2009 when she was just 11.
While there is sympathy for her, netizens have been more scathing of organizers of beauty and fashion pageants and others who exploit young people.
Those hiring minors as models and using their photos only want to promote themselves, she pointed out.
Thuy Nga, the mother of a teenager in Ho Chi Minh City, said: “Misusing children’s photos is unacceptable. I think they exploit her images.”

Just like Tran, 15-year-old Hong Que attracted public attention by endorsing several underwear brands last year.

In one show, she shocked people by pacing up and down the catwalk with just two small pasties covering her nipples. She was otherwise bare from the waist up.
Men who must have been her father’s age were goggling at her and pointing.
Immediately after the event, her photo was everywhere on the net.
Stars in eyes
Nevertheless, many parents support their children’s modeling dreams.
Many enroll their daughters when they are as young as 11 in model-training classes that are becoming popular in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
Several fashion companies are also hunting for very young models for their shows.
T.V., who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I’m a little scared after the Bao Tran scandal. But I have joined this class to be prettier.” She attends a class for models on Mac Dinh Chi Street, District 1, HCMC.
The law is not clear about hiring underage models. Circular No 21 issued by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in 1999 merely says teenage workers can be hired to do jobs appropriate for their age.

Vietnamese girls have been posing provocatively on websites and foreign magazines to attract attention and hopefully get a foothold in the entertainment industry.
A Google search for “Elly Tran” turns up 366,000 results. The 22-year-old Vietnamese-American, who now lives in Vietnam, can be seen mostly revealing her ample bosom and tiny waist in pictures distributed widely on the net.
Some of her most revealing photos have found their way into adult magazines under headlines like “the Paris Hilton of Vietnam” and “the hottest girl in Vietnam.”
Thanks to this, she has achieved certain success in the fashion and film industries and is now acting in Vietnam’s first 3D movie “Bong Ma Hoc Duong” (school ghosts) that will be released during Tet (Lunar New Year) next February.

Another starlet who has flaunted her curves is 21-year-old “Thuy Top.” Boasting 135,000 results on Google, the Hanoi girl, real name is Huynh Minh Thuy, got her nickname after netizens dubbed hers to be the biggest breasts in Vietnam.
Thuy Top, like Elly, poses in titillating positions, revealing as much as possible without completely shedding her clothes.
Boys too are in the race.
A search for “Chan Thanh San” produces 7,270 results, 90 percent of them featuring him semi- or near-nude, including at a nude show in Thailand.
One picture shows the 22-year-old completely naked with one hand covering his vitals.
“I find him offensive!” My Van, a student at Ho Chi Minh City’s Architecture University, says. “I think he uses his body to get into showbiz in disregard of public morality.”
Following in Elly, Thuy, and Sang’s footsteps, many Vietnamese youths have began posting revealing photos of themselves.
‘I am willing to go totally naked’
“If they can do it, so can I,” says Vo Hoa, a girl in her early twenties who won a local beauty contest last year.
She has posted some daring photos of hers on Facebook and spends several hours every day emailing them to foreign magazines to attract attention.
“If some foreign magazines want my photos, I’m willing to go totally naked,” she says.
“So far I have posed 90 percent naked because I live in Vietnam and I am afraid of being scolded by my parents”.
One photographer, who asked to remain anonymous, says everyone has a right to promote their image.
“Madonna started her career by showing off her body to draw public attention,” Hung Thinh, chairman of the Vietnamese Student Association in Sydney, points out.
He added that they should only be criticized if they rely solely on their looks and do not have talent.
But Bich Lien, a student of Foreign Trade University II, has a different opinion.
“The line between taking provocative photos and being forever tainted by those images is very thin. They are still very young and naïve… it sheds a negative light on Vietnam.”
Alton Chen, a Chinese-American also voiced unhappiness.
“They scare me and I scorn such people.”
He provided several examples, including that of Vietnamese-American model and actress Tila Nguyen who are “popular stars in the US... they are well-known but have not earned respect.”
