‘Bi, don’t be afraid’ wins top prize at U.S. film festival

Vietnamese movie ‘Bi, don’t be afraid’ won the Bronze Drum prize for best feature film at the Vietnam International Film Festival in California last week, reports Tuoi Tre.At the University of California, the film, directed by Phan Dang Di, beat three other nominated films, ‘Floating Lives’, ‘Saigon Yo’ and ‘Antoine’ to win the top honor at the festival. Horror film ‘Behind the Death’ directed by Ta Nguyen Hiep won the Bronze Drum for best short.
Do Hai Yen and Dustin Nguyen won the best actress and actor awards for their roles as the protagonists Suong and Vo in ‘Floating Lives’.

In the audiences’ awards category, ‘Things you don’t joke’ (16 minutes) directed by Viet Nguyen and ‘The fading light’ (23 minutes) directed by Thien Do won the best short films and ‘Touch’ by Minh Duc Nguyen won best feature film.
The biennial festival, which started in 2003, is held by two U.S. non-profit organizations, the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association and the Vietnamese Language and Culture. This year’s event had 67 entries which were also shown at several universities and was a big attraction for the Vietnamese community in the U.S.
